Bridging the Skills Gap

Vertical Alignment and 3D Technology Integration

Empower students by making 3D technology accessible to every classroom, focusing on future designers and entrepreneurs. Through strategic partnerships, we integrate 3D tools into core subjects, enhancing creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving to prepare students for tomorrow.

What is STEM Vertical Alignment?

Imagine being able to dive deep into the tiniest building blocks of life, like cells and molecules. From elementary to middle to high school, students often encounter challenges with industry-grade software that is either too advanced and complex for younger learners or too simplistic and limited, particularly as their interests develop. Many elementary students find that the software designed for their age group lacks the power and capabilities to sustain their engagement. By the time students reach middle school, they are typically expected to transition to a more advanced software program, leading to frustration and a loss of confidence in their abilities. One of the significant hurdles students face is the need to switch between various applications as their skills progress, which can hinder their learning experience and diminish their enthusiasm for STEM subjects.

What is 3D Technology?

3D technology refers to tools and techniques that create, manipulate, and visualize objects in three-dimensional space. This technology encompasses 3D modeling, printing, visualization, simulation, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR). 3D modeling allows users to design objects digitally in three dimensions, while 3D printing translates these models into physical objects layer by layer, bringing digital designs to life. VR and AR applications immerse users in interactive, lifelike environments, enabling simulation and training in real-time settings. 3D technology's adaptability and potential for innovation make it a valuable asset across many sectors, helping to improve processes, foster creativity, and solve complex problems in diverse professional settings.

Job Market Trends The 3D technology market, encompassing 3D printing, modeling, design, virtual reality(VR), and mixed reality (MR), is on a rapid growth trajectory. Estimated at $16.75 billion in 2022, it reached $20.37 billion in 2023 and is projected to expand to $88.28 billion by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23.3%. This surge is generating substantial job growth; roles in 3D printing, VR development, and CAD design are expected to create over 1 million jobs worldwide by 2030.

Hands-on projects simulating real-world challenges, promoting innovative problem-solving

Grant-Funded Programs

We aim to bridge the gap in STEM education by establishing a state-of-the-art 3D Labs program for youth, where participants can engage with 3D printers, scanners, virtual reality goggles, and cutting-edge software. 3D labs can be integrated into current programming in place, creating new and exciting ways to increase interest in current curriculums, supercharging STEM programs, or adding innovative and hands-on learning projects.

Unlocking Funding for 3D Technology and STEM Programs

There is substantial grant funding available to support innovative STEM initiatives, particularly in emerging fields like 3D technology. Federal grants from the Department of Education and the National Science Foundation offer funding opportunities ranging from $100,000 to over $1 million for STEM-focused projects, with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and workforce readiness—perfect for programs like 3D Pathways that equip students with essential technology skills.

State-level grants and industry-specific funding are also available, with awards typically ranging from $25,000 to $500,000. These grants support educational programs, curriculum development, equipment acquisition, and career pathway programs. SelfCAD’s team of grant writers is here to guide schools and nonprofits through the application process, helping to align proposals with funding priorities and secure the resources needed to bring 3D technology programs to life.

Our experienced grant writer—Abby Everingham—will assist schools and nonprofits in developing compelling proposals. By partnering with nonprofits, we ensure strong applications and a smooth process. Schools commit with a small application fee, demonstrating dedication to the grant process, and we work closely with partners to manage timelines, budgets, and successful outcomes.

Key Features of SelfCAD

SelfCAD is a professional grade software that grows with the learner.

Accessible Anywhere

Accessible on their school issued device online or offline and teachers can give students 3D models to investigate and answer questions from home.

Cross-Curricular Learning

By integrating 3D into core subjects, we can create a more cohesive and engaging experience. This integration can foster collaboration between teachers of different subjects, encouraging a more interdisciplinary approach to education.

Testimonials

Andy Cozens - Program Leader:

The best student friendly CAD/Slicing software available all running through your browser! SelfCAD bridges the gap between basic introductory programs and industry level programs ensuring more students pursue CAD careers.

Takes our student’s CAD skills to the next level without the intimidation that comes with other CAD programs. Introduces high level CAD concepts to our students, from sculpting 3D models to creating realistic 3D renderings, in the most accessible way!

The fact that it’s web based allows our students to use it with any of our computers, including chromebooks. In the past other CAD programs have left our student’s feeling discouraged or bored but with SelfCAD they leave feeling empowered and excited!

Instructor Quotes:

Rohan - I love using the guided step by step tutorials. With a few clicks you can turn your own example design into a mini lesson that students can work through independently from start to finish.

Joey - We’ve used SelfCAD to make poppit fidgets, name plates, desk organizers and more.

It’s much easier to teach slicing with SelfCAD compared to other softwares i’ve tried.

Nour - I was able to teach a student who’d never used CAD before to print their own design in one 90 minute lesson.

“What did you enjoy about this course?”

Tobias - being able to just create ANYTHING and not a specific thing, it lets your imagination come through.

Srikrishna -The creativity boost that it gives you.

Zaire - Building my own race car

Payton - I love 3d printing

Aidan - I enjoyed doing something new.

Adelynn - I have never done something so fun in my life!

Alexander - I enjoyed making my own creation

Mia - Everything! I liked doing the challenges, building our own creations, trying hard things, and mostly all of it! I learned a bunch of new things, this really helped me learn how to build our 3d projects, and, I'm very excited to see results! 100/10!

Cassidy - You can do any design you want.

Gianna - I enjoyed learning what 3d printing is  and how to design a 3d print on computer

Keegan - The free will of designing and the fact that its on a computer and because we get to keep what we make.

I've seen a substantial shift in understanding about modeling and prototyping by assertively and early exposure to platforms like SelfCAD. It generates authentic and sustained learning of various aspects of life skills. As mentioned by Jennifer Christian, these concepts are by nature transferable to different realities, and allow nuestr@s students to apply interdisciplinary skills at all times. The work and curricular offerings, specifically as a school  #IB in the #MYP programs, with a clear anchor in these real-world issues, are a GAME-CHANGER for all sectors of the educational field, from academics to student recruitment!  - Technology and Design Coordinator

First off, I would like to say that SelfCAD’s strongest feature is a digestible approach to 3D modeling that gives users the features they want without the mysterious hidden menus or esoteric shortcuts that are common in other software. I have had the pleasure of sending the past couple weeks experimenting in SelfCAD and trying out the interactive tutorials. Being in the shoes of a beginner again has provided a chance to appreciate the layout of the user interface which lays bare everything you need to begin making in 3D. Simple things like 3D Sketch or Extrusions are findable via the tools across the top of the workspace. As soon as you have chosen something to use, the parameters for the several different ways to apply that tool appear on the left side of the screen.  - MakerSpace Coordinator
